Being Danish

Dear 2c students
I´m a Dane, but what  makes me a Dane? Is it my Danish passport or is it the fact that I live in Denmark?
Is nationality something you are born with or something you are able to choose?
What do you think?

  1. We have discussed it in a group, Josephine, Rikke B. and me.
We agreed on that the background is very important. If you are born in Denmark, you are danish, if you just immigrated, you will never be. Bort people who have been adopted, is also danish.
Being danish is following the rules in Denmark and adjusting to the way we live. For example people who immigrate and wont give up their own religion, they are not true Danes.
You don't have to look "danish", you can just be yourself as long as you fit in to the society.

  2. It’s always hard to explain and define something you have been all along.
To be a Dane is something that is just as ingrained in my consciousness as, for example, my gender.
But if I really should define what makes me a Dane …

It is, of course, a composition of a great deal of things. As a Dane I am proud of our democracy. I am proud to live in a country where the public sector, our safety net, is more important than the individual’s right to more money and more power.
I am proud to live in a nation where we can all go to the hospital for free.
I am proud to live in a nation where the students are provided money to go to school - instead of paying.
And then I am, most importantly, proud to have a female social democratic Prime Minister.
All of these great values in our society I see as typical Danish things. And all of these I appreciate and admire our Danish society for, because it is a fair solution and a quite unique and selfless system.

  4. I think that there is many things that makes you a dane!
you have to follow the rules we have in Denmark, and understand that Denmark is a society were we help each other. I think that the values in our society, are something that represents the danish people.
If you are an immigrant and still believe in your own religion you are not danish, you just live in Denmark.

When i think of a Danish person. i think that is´t someone with light skin, and light hair. But it is not the skin colour that makes you danish. It is the way you live, and the rules you follow.

  6. I am a Dane. In Denmark we have a special way of thinking, something that makes us unique – something that makes us Danish.
The beliefs of our nation differ a lot from others. These are based on the thought that all human are of endless value. Therefore, we put the wellbeing of others before our own – we handout a coin or two to the homeless person at the station; we offer a helping hand when organizations raise money for others; we bring a cake for the parent-teacher meeting in our children’s school.
We make sure that few have too much and that fewer have too little. Our society provides a free education, a free health care system, and strives to help those in trouble back on their ways. In Denmark we all provide to the common best by giving what we are able to. We pay our taxes with a smile, because we know that the single-mother can now afford to make a healthy meal for her two children; because we know that the hard-working low-income man can now retire before he is all worn out; because we know that not a single person is abandoned by society; because we know that newcomers are welcomed with a smile and a better life
The diversity in our society is united in one universal system, which does not treat people differently. The social cohesion of our society is stronger than the barriers dividing us.
And that is what makes you and I – all of us – Danish.

  7. What makes me a Dane?

I am proud to be a Dane, because we have our own monetary standard. We have the Danish Krone, which I believe is special, due to the fact that we are also in the European Union, where the most countries have the Euro as their monetary standard.

I also think that the rights we have makes me Danish. For instance, freedom of speech makes me Danish. Of course, other countries have freedom of speech as well, but a major difference is that we have fought for it a few years ago, due to an artist drawing Muhammed with a bomb in his turban, and hell went loose. We stood by our rights to have freedom of speech, and that is something I personall am very proud of.

I am proud of our democracy, our history and heritage, and

  9. What makes me Danish?
Well, not being from Denmark I cannot claim being Danish, but there are some things that come to my mind when I think of what makes people Danish. I think I will always call myself an American and I don't know if I would ever truly be able to claim being Danish even if I were to become fluent in Danish and live here permanently. To me being Danish involves loving your country, participating in the traditions, living a Danish lifestyle, speaking Danish, being involved in your community in Denmark, and just overall being proud to be Danish.
I think being a Danish person is a very unique thing and so different from being from another country. Even with me only living in Denmark around three months I have observed that Denmark is a very unique country. To me it is a small country filled with a lot of unity and pride for their country.
I think everyone has a very different idea on what it means to be a Dane, but to me it also involves taking care of one another and being proud of where you come from and where you live. In the end I still don't know if I will be able to call myself a true Dane after the end of this year, but I hope I can always be an honorary Dane.

  10. There is many ways to be Danish, but what is a truly Dane? You can be an immigrant in Denmark with love to the country and be involved in the Danish society, or you can be a native Dane without any interest for the country or involvement in the society, but what is the point being Danish then?

To me being Danish is about to be proud of my country and to love my country. It is about to know the language and to know the Danish history and culture, no matter whether you are a immigrant or not. Denmark is a country to be proud of. Our democracy is at the top and the Danish population’s voice is very important for the society to function. We can get financial help almost anytime we need it, we have great opportunities for education and we have the freedom of expression.

  12. I think that being danish is about how we are as people, how we love to be with each other. The danish people love to spend time with their love ones, that is also why the word "hygge" is known in many countries in the world. Besides that we are a people that take care of each other, and not just the danish people, but also the immigrants that choose to come here. Of cause there is some rules that should be followed and things that should be done before the immigrants can call them self a danish citizen, but the immigrants love the way that we open our arms to them.
And then to the food, that is an important thing for all the danish people. We love the roasted pork (flæskesteg), and then some sauce and potatoes. In Denmark there is much food that we call "danish food", but that is not what makes us danish, that we have some food that we calls our, because i think that every country have that kind of food - but it is the food that we eat that makes us danish. It is not many countries where they love pork, and some countries do not even eat that kind of meat. So i think that it is important that we have "our" food, but i also think that it is something that everyione has in the world.
And the last thing is the pride, we are very proud of our country, the way it looks and the way that we take care of our selfs, but also the ones that need it in other countries. Most people are proud of the country that they live in, but we are not proud of our country as the americans for example are proud of America. So i think that it is an important thing too, that makes the danish people sticked together. Cause that is a value that we love, the community!

  13. What makes me a Dane?
Well i dont think that a danish passport is enough to call yourself a Dane. You have to be born by 100% danish people. You have to live by the rules and traditions we believe in in Denmark. I also think that it is something about being proud of your country. For exemple being proud of that Danes are the happiest people on earth. And to get involved and care about your country.

  14. What make me a Dane?
It is a difficult question, but I will try to explain my opinion.

To be a Dane is much more than a passport and a cultural canon.
It is about loving the country and loving the people. If you come as Immigrated to Denmark with a good attitude and wants to be a part of the danish society, you are just as danish as the Danes native.
Denmark has become global, but still, it is importen to keep the dansih food, dansih traditions and the danish languages.
